Membrane scission by the ESCRT-III complex

The endosomal sorting complex required for transport (ESCRT) system is necessary for multivesicular body biogenesis and has been conserved from archaea to animals. Researchers at the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, and the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, have shown that Vps20 is one of three ESCRT subunits needed to detach intralumenal vesicles (ILV). Their multi-angle light scattering data from the DAWN HELEOS II along with Optilab rEX differential refractometer data allowed them to determine that Vps20 and the partial C-terminal deletion construct Vps20ΔC are monodisperse.
