Already using MALS for analyzing the molar mass of your macromolecules and nanoparticles, as well as their size by rg? DLS determines size down to a radius of 0.5 nm and is essential for characterizing the size of biomolecules smaller than the 10 nm MALS limit. To further characterize the conformation of larger particles, online DLS is invaluable for determining the hydrodynamic radius rh in order to calculate the shape factor ρ=rg/rh. DLS can also determine size of metallic nanoparticles and others that may not be amenable to MALS measurement due to a complex refractive index.
An alternative to the WyattQELS embedded DLS Module is coupling the detection module of a DynaPro NanoStar or Möbiuζ to the MALS flow cell of a DAWN, miniDAWN or μDAWN MALS detector to measure static and dynamic light scattering simultaneously. Using the DLS Compatibility Kit, ASTRA will recognize and connect to the DLS instrument, and acquire DLS data, as if it were actually embedded in the MALS instrument.
