Lignins exhibit significant absorbance of MALS laser light and consequent fluorescent radiation, present a significant challenge for most light scattering instruments.

The DAWN^® multi-angle light scattering (MALS) detector incorporates two features to overcome these challenges and provide accurate molar mass determination: 1) a forward laser monitor that can be used to measure absorption; and 2) band-pass filters to block fluorescent photons and transmit only the scattered photons.
