September 11, 2017 - Flow-field flow fractionation (flow-FFF) offers highly versatile separations for the analysis of complex fluids, covering a size range of macromolecules and particles from 1 nm to 10,000 nm. However, flow-FFF is often perceived as a difficult technique to learn because of the multiple parameters available for adjustment.
Our new SCOUT DPS® software simulates flow-FFF from basic physical principles, enabling the virtual optimization of flow-FFF methods and opening up the power of flow-FFF separations to non-experts. SCOUT DPS also analyzes particle size distributions (hydrodynamic radius) by elution time to increase characterization capabilities. This publication in The Column explains how it works.

August 31, 2017 - The µDAWN® multi-angle light scattering (MALS) detector was developed to meet the need for a low-volume, low-dispersion MALS instrument compatible with size-exclusion UHPLC (SE-UHPLC). Congratulations to Drs. Vincent Hsieh and Philip J. Wyatt on the publication of their article, “Measuring proteins with greater speed and resolution while reducing sample size” in Scientific Reports. The paper describes the analysis of NIST standard reference material SRM 8671, a monoclonal antibody developed to benchmark analytical instruments for the biopharmaceutical industry, with the µDAWN.

August 11, 2017 - 3G isn’t just a telecommunications term anymore. It’s also an abbreviation for the three generations of Wyatts working at Wyatt Technology this summer. While there have been 2G—or two generations—of Wyatts working at Wyatt Technology for more than thirty years, this summer we welcomed Spenser Wyatt, Geof’s son, to intern under Ross Bryant, Wyatt Technology’s Vice President for Sales & Marketing, doing Market Research. Besides investigating instrument population density throughout the United States, and researching new sales tools, Spenser has audited Light Scattering University and surveyed students about their experiences at LSU.

July 1, 2017 - Dynamic light scattering is not just for proteins and nanoparticles. In the field of small-molecule drug discovery, high-throughput DLS with the DynaPro Plate Reader II has at least one key role - preventing the accumulation of misleading hits, or false positives, that are a result of aggregated compounds. Brian Shoichet's UCSF lab has been instrumental in elucidating the mechanism of action and prevention of these promiscuous inhibitors, utilizing the DynaPro PRII for detection and formulation. Read highlights of his publications and a link to a recent online interview.

May 31, 2017 - When two technology leaders team up to advance the state of the art in polymer and biopharmaceutical characterization, customers can expect to see some real benefits coming down the pipeline. Wyatt and Waters have been collaborating for some time on joint educational efforts around UPLC®, APC and the μDAWN®, but now it is official. In the words of Cliff Wyatt, Executive Vice President of Wyatt Technology, “We’re delighted to be partnering these ‘best in class’ products to improve the accuracy and throughput of our mutual customers.” Click here to read the press release on our co-marketing agreement with Waters.

May 19, 2017 - Introducing the next generation miniDAWN: the miniDAWN® TREOS® II. In designing the TREOS II, your productivity was our guiding light. The TREOS II is modular and field-serviceable, adds ease-of-use features to make SEC-MALS even easier, and is upgradeable to a μDAWN. This new instrument is also more sensitive than the previous TREOS and has a larger range of size (hydrodynamic radius) measurement. May 9, 2017 - Protein-protein binding studies are only as good as the quality of the reagents used in the experiments. Great resources in terms of instrumentation, sample production and scientist time are typically invested in high-throughput screening of antibodies or fragments to obtain optimal therapeutic candidates, perform epitope binning and rank candidates by affinity and kinetics. However, often little attention is paid to verifying protein solution quality—which can lead researchers down the proverbial rabbit hole, chasing after ephemeral or anomalous results that are caused by degraded proteins. To download a white paper describing a fast, easy and non-perturbing pre-screening method using the DynaPro Plate Reader II.

April 13, 2017 – Wyatt Technology, in partnership with the University of Minnesota, presented a polymer characterization seminar in the Twin Cities to over fifty scientists and engineers. Dr. Jeff Ahlgren was the keynote speaker and discussed ways in which size-exclusion chromatography (SEC) or gel permeation chromatography (GPC) coupled with multi-angle light scattering (MALS), refractive index (RI) and differential viscometry can be a powerful technique in determining important polymer characteristics such as: absolute molar mass, size, branching and conformation. Many of our long time and loyal customers attended and got a chance to hear about the latest developments at Wyatt Technology including the new, benchmark-setting ViscoStar III.
